A DOCUMENTARY FILM BY MATTIAS BAVRÉ
52 min – colour – DCP – Dutch, Ukrainian & English spoken
Zlata is a uniquely intimate portrait of a girl on the eve of puberty who fled the war in Ukraine and ended up in an unfamiliar land. Belgium. The film subtly conveys a universal migration story and is witness to the impact of war on children.
Young documentary filmmaker Mattias Bavré (with Polish roots) developed a privileged relationship with Zlata and her family since he temporarily hosted them upon their arrival in Ghent, Belgium. The making of this film became a way for Zlata and her parents to share their experience of being displaced by war. Mattias’ sober, personal and patient way of observing Zlata for six months allows us a glimpse of her first hesitant footsteps in her new world.
